What we do
Creative Communications offers production and consulting for print, web. We listen carefully to our clients, encourage collaborative brainstorming, plan carefully and conduct research as needed prior to production. We want your story delivered clearly, to the right audience, with maximum impact. Our professional writers, editors, illustraters and photographers can create or refine content for your project if needed. A project manager keeps costs and schedules on track. We also offer a-la-carte services to help publishers create special publications or meet deadlines when short-staffed.

Jim BurnsCreative Communications principal Jim Burns earned a BS in journalism from the University of Florida. He has worked in communications for 26 years. Jim writes, edits, designs, translates, shoots photos and video, produces multimedia and is art director for the firm. He is personally responsible for insuring client satisfaction. Jim grew up in Latin America and enjoys outdoor adventures, particularly on Florida’s coasts, rivers and springs. His most recent book read is The Miracle of Mind Power by Dan Custer. His business and personal motto, adapted from Covey’s 7 Habits… book, is “Seek first to understand and empathize.”

Senior web designer/developer, project manager and software trainer Carolina Madera has crafted over 500 Web Sites thus far in her career, giving her a vast base of technical and design experience.  She has blessed Creative Communications with her skills for the past six years. Carolina was formerly creative director and senior web developer at Seventhman, in Orange Park, FL, and prior to that, Silverscape Technologies, Inc. in Gainesville, FL. Her current duties also include e-commerce development and training. Carolina has over twelve years experience in web design and development. Her art and design background stretches back to sixth grade, where she attended a magnet school for visual and performing arts. In her offtime, she is a girl scout leader, pet rescue volunteer and peformer at Universal Studios.

JenJen Long has worked as a programmer since 1999 and has been designing and programming websites since 2001. Her primary focus is adding functionality to new or existing websites with php programming and mySQL databases. Her portfolio includes ecommerce, content management, custom databases and scripts, merchant account integration, network setup, as well as dynamic elements, She also provides one-on-one or small group computer training. When not working, Jen enjoys kayaking, rock climbing, camping, sky diving and traveling.

John Simon has a gift and passion for helping people understand information using interactive, moving graphics with sound. With Jim Burns, he produced and illustrated a feature-length Flash presentation about solutions to traffic congestion. John delights in creating fun, animated characters as well as dynamic content and navigation. He also produces learning modules, guided slideshows, action quick tips and simple graphics.  He is a well-organized, efficient and a fun-to-work-with artist! He has worked with education leaders such as CompassLearning and McGraw-Hill, as well as public education agencies.  His motto is, “If you are going to present an idea, you might as well make it fun to learn.” See samples of John’s work at JGSimon.com.

Designer and illustrator Alec McDaniel is a gifted artist with exceptional mastery of digital artwork creation tools. His favorites are Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, but he is highly skilled in many others, and intuitively learns new software at break-neck speed. Among his more spectacular creations are an anatomically-credible robotic Jaguar with an air of mythological menace, created for the University of Pittsburgh Robotics Club, and a father’s day message digitally created out of “melting snow” letters on the side of an Alaskan mountain. Alec has worked for Creative Communications since 2002, creating web sites, logos, complex photo-manipulation artwork, illustrations and custom typefaces. He currently lives in and works from Anchorage, Alaska, where he enjoys snowmobiling, canoeing, rafting and hiking in very chilly weather. Like many CC associates, Alec is a graduate of the nationally acclaimed graphic design program at Santa Fe Community College.

MarkMark Tanner (Tropikordia Computer Services) is an experienced, friendly web programmer specializing in high-end dynamic functionality. He can enrich web sites with elegant tools to manage email, groups, meetings, documents, and online voting. He also programs site login services, credit card / Paypal payment gateways, and Content Management Systems for updating the text and images on web sites. Mark has 25 years Internet experience, dating back to Arpanet. He is also a musician, and travels worldwide to perform on the cello. 

Adrian Latscu, an outstanding artist and graphic designer, started drawing at age five and has continued to grow in skill and versatility. Adrian’s artwork earned him the Superlative award as most talented student in his high school graduating class. He has worked with Creative Communications since 2003, and drew many of the futuristic transportation scenes for www.AutomatedTransport.com. Adrian is a graduate of the Graphic Design program at Santa Fe Community College, where he was on the Dean's list four times. Adrian is also a band musician. He lives in Orlando, FL, where he works for Graphic Imagination, Inc., a national design firm specializing in fleet markings for law enforcement, fire / emergency services, and commercial vehicles. Recently, he designed a logo for the city of Mount Dora, Florida.

HollyHolly Franklin’s superb eye for design and illustration has been recognized with several awards, including an ADDY from the Gainesville (FL) Advertising Federation. Holly earned an AS degree in graphic design from SFCC, and is now studying painting at the University of Florida (UF) College of Fine Arts. Holly has worked with Creative Communications on several logo projects and has also designed logos, posters and displays for UF’s College of Engineering and various student groups. She is an avid Harry Potter fan who delights in art, music and best friend Tosh, her faithful 103-pound labrador and mastiff mix companion.

AnnaAnna Horton was born in New Orleans, LA, and began drawing at an early age. She grew up in Miami, FL. Anna attended New World School of the Arts, taking courses in graphic design and illustration, studied abroad in Mexico and Greece, and graduated with a BFA in Printmaking. She is currently a member of SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) pursuing a career in book illustration and fine arts.
  

AvaAva Berlin has been an artist and photographer for nearly 20 years. She also creates original fine art, logos and illustrations for web, film and print projects. Ava was awarded a Multicultural Scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and the National Scholastic Gold medal for photography.  She earned a degree in graphic design from Santa Fe Community College and is working toward her BFA at SCAD. An avid film buff and dog lover, Ava also enjoys redesigning discarded furniture and traveling with her daughter and fellow adventurer, Ariel.

Sharon Julien has been designing Web Sites since 1995, creating sites that are both beautifully unique and easy to use.  Some of her projects include online stores, updateable event calendars, member login areas, photo galleries and simple forms that allow Web Site owners to change their own content.  She believes that a Web Site should be functional, elegant and friendly, like a Swiss Army knife, a Rolls Royce and a Golden Retriever all rolled into one.  Sharon is a native Floridian who has called Gainesville home for over 18 years.  She loves just about anything adventurous and has gone skydiving, hang gliding and hot air ballooning.  She also enjoys belly dancing and traveling.  Her dream destinations include white water rafting the Colorado River and exploring the Egyptian pyramids.  Her favorite quote is: "No matter what question you have, love is always the right answer." David Muir is a well-organized web designer, programmer and videographer with ties to Creative Communications (CC) since 2003. He has several years experience designing and coding HTML, Javascript, PHP, and mySQL database systems. His current project at CC is "WebXPlan," an interactive web application that guides users through a series of options to create an outline business plan and bid proposal document for new web sites or web site redesigns. In addition to freelance work and scholastic commitments, David is employed as an IT specialist at Prioria Robotics, a Gainesville, Florida based engineering firm.

Travis Johnson has been designing for almost a decade. Travis, who excels in the design of unique web layouts and Flash presentations, has worked with Creative Communications since 2005. He has designed advertising for clients such as Nike, Domino's and The New York Times as a designer for the Gainesville Sun. Travis is currently enrolled at Santa Fe Community College, focusing on art studies. In his free time, he enjoys rock climbing and traveling.

Mauricio “Mo” Neira has 23 years experience in all areas of creative media, encompassing ENG/EFP video production, desktop publishing and graphic design. Highlights include an Ace Award for a medical documentary series and awards in art photography. Maurice produced Ritmovision, a Latin music video show, and now publishes a free surf mag, Shred. He and his wife Michelle enjoy boating and are raising their four youngsters in Vero Beach, Florida.

Julie Burns, BS, MS, heads the Creative Communications translation service from her home in Santa Rosa, California. She has been a Spanish-English translator, and a coordinator for other language translators, for 25 years. She also travels worldwide to teach language interpretation skills. Julie grew up in Latin America and likes exploring the great outdoors, experimenting with ethnic cuisines, and spending time with friends and family. She is currently reading Saving the World by Julia Alvarez and her motto this year is “Life is supposed to be fun!”

associates
Our associates work with us on a project basis, and provide added depth and stability to the firm, as well as more flexibility in design and illustration styles. They also contribute specialty skills, including PHP, Perl MySQL programming, new technologies, 3D artwork, photo manipulation, Interactive Flash, and video production. Our associates are reliable professionals with whom we have established close, successful work relationships over the course of at least one year and in other cases three to 10 years.
